The Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal, also known as São Filipe Castle, is located in a dominant position on a hill, fronting the coastal town of Setúbal, dominating the left bank of the mouth of the river Sado and the Atlantic Ocean in Portugal.

    A privileged Atlantic port, the first defensive structure of this important town was a wall begun at the time of King D. Afonso IV (1325-57) and completed in the following reign, under D. Pedro I (1356-67), with the function of containing the assaults of pirates and corsairs usually coming from North Africa

    In the twentieth century from the 1940s it became the subject of conservation and restoration interventions by the Directorate General of National Monuments and Buildings (DGEMN). The project of adapting the structure to the functions of the current hostel, affiliated to Rede Pousadas de Portugal, dates from 1964. It suffered further damage caused by the 1969 earthquake, and recovery was completed the following year.
