Know more about Sado dolphins

There is in Sado a community of croaker roosters, commonly called dolphins, with about 28 elements, consisting of individuals of both sexes and of diverse ages that roam the estuary and the adjacent coastal zone, being frequently observed in small or large groups.

The roaz, with the scientific name of "Tursiops truncatus", is relatively common along the Portuguese mainland coast, standing out the population that inhabits the Sado estuary, due to its unique character in the national territory, and one of the few European level.

The roazes, which normally live between 40 and 50 years, have an average length of about 3 meters, gray color almost black in the dorsal area where a dorsal fin stands out, which is the fundamental element for the individual identification of each dolphin .

All the species in the Sado estuary are identified by their name (Wing, the Dark, the Hook, the Hillocks, the Todi, the Bisnau, etc.), thanks to their individual knowledge of the shapes and dimensions of their dorsal fins .

Dolphins, like us humans, have their soul states, being very playful and even interactive with people who observe them, or are more concerned about their food and do not attach much importance to us.

If they have babies they will try to move away from us in order to instinctively protect them, which we must understand and respect.

Our probability of finding the Sado dolphin community is very high (95%), swimming, jumping and playing all kinds of games with each other.

It is only the fact that, occasionally and rarely, traveling farther to more distant places, it can make it more difficult to locate the community, where we can not guarantee a 100% sighting rate.
